What are Educational Services?
Our BCBAs routinely reach out to teachers and other service providers to ensure there is a high level of continuity of care and generalization of skills. However, there are instances when additional educational services and supports are required to create an optimal educational setting that fits the needs of each unique learner. This is why ASPB has contracted with Wanda Malone, who is a special needs educational advocate and a mother of a child with special needs.
Wanda has 2 boys who are 15- and 16-years old. Her 16-year-old son has been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD and PANDAS. Once Wanda found out her first born had Autism, she decided to stay at home to help her son and ensure he was obtaining the maximum amount of therapies and services available to him at that time.
Wanda has over 13 years of personal experience navigating the IEP journey. She can establish a collaborative team approach ensuring that the child receives the services required to meet his unique learning needs. Her key focus is ensuring that the IEP is written to prepare the child for the future and ensuring that functional goals are part of the IEP.
Wanda’s role is to guide and assist the parents and the IEP team through the IEP process.
Wanda is uniquely qualified to review IEP documents, attend school meetings, and support families in acquiring the educational needs for their children. Although she is not a lawyer, she has a solid understanding of the Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) standards, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and other special education rights. Additionally, she is also a member of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA), which is a National Organization for Educational Advocates and Special Needs Attorneys.
Typically a family could pay hundreds of dollars per hour to hire a well-informed educational advocate, however families that are currently receiving therapeutic services through ASPB have access to Wanda with no additional out-of-pocket costs. ASPB recognizes the needs of our families and proactively pay Wanda so that families can utilize her services free of charge.
